Report: Arsenal could move for striker Spurs missed out on last summer

According to The Sun, Arsenal could make a move for Ollie Watkins, who has allegedly been a long-term target for Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham were linked with a move for Watkins during the summer of 2020 after the striker scored 26 goals in the Championship during the 2019/20 campaign for Brentford.

However, the North London club reportedly passed up on the opportunity to sign the striker as they deemed Brentford’s asking price to be too excessive and ended up signing Carlos Vinicius on a loan deal instead.

The 25-year-old eventually completed a £28m move to Aston Villa last summer and had a solid first season in the Premier League, finishing the campaign with 14 goals.

During this summer, some sources suggested that Spurs were considering Watkins as a replacement for Harry Kane should the England captain complete a transfer to City.

Spanish publication Fichajes even claimed just last month that the Villa man continues to be on Tottenham’s radar, with Fabio Paratici on the lookout for forwards to replace Kane next summer.

However, if The Sun’s latest report is to be believed, Spurs’ North London rivals may make a move for Watkins in January.

The report claims that Mikel Arteta’s side are preparing for the exit of Alexandre Lacazette and have identified Watkins as an option to replace the Frenchman.

Spurs Web Opinion

Watkins has had a poor start to the new season on the back of his impressive first campaign in the Premier League. So, the jury is still out on whether the 25-year-old can perform consistently at this level. Besides, I doubt if either Spurs or Arsenal would be able to snap up the England man as Dean Smith’s men will likely price him out of a transfer.
