Report: Arsenal have enquired about signing Spurs target on loan

According to a report from The Athletic, Arsenal have enquired about signing rumoured Tottenham target Houssem Aouar on loan from Lyon this summer.

Reports so far this summer have alleged that Aouar is on the radars of both Tottenham and Arsenal, while Liverpool are also thought to have shown interest in the French international.

Some sources have indicated that Tottenham’s managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, is an admirer of the midfielder, having tried to take him to Juventus last summer.

The 23-year-old has just two years left to run on his contract at the Groupama Stadium and the Ligue 1 club’s head coach, Peter Bosz has admitted the midfielder could depart before the end of the month.

The Athletic have now stated that Aouar very much remains on Mikel Arteta’s radar. The report explains that Lyon are ready to cash in on the midfielder if they receive an offer of around €25m (£21.2m).

It is said that while Arsenal see it as a fantastic opportunity for that price, the Gunners have so far only enquired about signing the player on loan.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the amount of interest in Aouar 12 months ago and the prices that were being mooted back then, it is extremely surprising that no one has snapped up the midfielder this summer despite Lyon’s modest asking price.

That could be partly because clubs outside the Premier League are struggling financially due to the impact of the pandemic. I also suspect that both Spurs and Arsenal view the Frenchman as a backup target rather than as a priority.
