Report: Arsenal looking to sign Spurs defender to solve problems at the back

Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with one of the strongest central defender partnerships in world football over the last few years.

Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both grew up playing together at Ajax, have partnered each other on numerous occasions for Belgium, and now countless games for Tottenham too.

With a great understanding of each other’s games, as well as the right-foot and left-foot combination, they have been mainstays in the Spurs defence, and top performers for the last few seasons.

However, Jan and Toby both have contracts that end in the summer of 2020, having had them each extended for a year earlier this season (Telegraph).

While Vertonghen’s is a simple extension, Alderweireld’s comes with a £25m release clause for this summer (Guardian).

Spurs will be hoping the defender chooses to see out his contract with the North London club, but Arsenal have now been linked with a move for the player.

Unai Emery is said to want Arsenal to spend in the defensive area this summer, with Alderweireld, Kurt Zouma, and Harry Maguire named as top targets by the Metro.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I believe that Alderweireld will choose to see out his contract at Tottenham, and who knows, maybe even sign another extension next season. However, if he does choose to leave, I see no scenario where he ends up at a Premier League club, let alone Arsenal. Why would he take a step down to go to the Gunners when Spurs are clearly on the up? Why would he also burn his bridges with Tottenham, much like Sol Campbell? I can’t see it happening in a million years.
