Report: Arsenal want Toby Alderweireld to do a Sol Campbell

Arsenal are rumoured to be monitoring Toby Alderweireld’s contract situation at Tottenham Hotspur with a view to making an offer for him during the summer, The Sun are reporting.

Tottenham triggered an extension clause in the defender’s contract that will keep the Belgium defender in north London until the summer of 2020 after he was due to become a free agent at the end of the season.

By taking up the option for an additional year, a £25million release clause which runs from the start of the 2019 summer transfer window was activated which has put a number of clubs on high alert including Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City.

It would be an unthinkable prospect if Alderweireld was to do a Sol Campbell and make the move to Tottenham’s fierce rivals. Granted, Campbell promised to sign a new contract and left on a free transfer – but any sort of transfer would certainly leave a sour taste in the mouths of Spurs supporters.

Daniel Levy needs to move heaven and earth to get Alderweireld to commit his future to the club, to part with Alderweireld for £25million would be criminal.
