Report: Arsenal’s decision could open door for Spurs to swoop for player

According to a report in the Daily Star, Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal have decided against pursuing a deal for Sampdoria centre back Joachim Andersen.

The report claims that the Gunners are not prepared to meet the Serie A club’s £31.2 million-valuation of the 23-year-old.

It has previously been reported Spurs were tracking the Danish international’s progress (Evening Standard), and the report in the Daily Star claims that the Lilywhites could now move for the young defender, who Pochettino views as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian, who has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers since moving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, has a release clause of £25 million in his contract (The Guardian) and has been linked with both Manchester United and Juventus (The Mirror).

However, the 30-year-old has hinted at the possibility of staying at the club beyond this summer (ESPN), and so it remains to be seen if the club will move for another centre half this window.

We feel that it would be ideal if the club hung on to Alderweireld for another season, and focused instead on improving other areas of the squad this summer.

Tottenham are pretty well stocked at the heart of their defence, even though the Belgian pair of Vertonghen and Alderweireld may be getting on a bit in footballing terms, Sanchez and Foyth both have the potential to develop into top defenders.
