Report: Ashley Phillips may have already found his next loan move away from Spurs

Ashley Phillips may have to wait another season for his senior Spurs debut, as Sheffield United are already planning on signing the young defender on loan for next season.

Tottenham managed to sign Ashley Phillips last summer for just £2m, exploiting a clause in his contract at Blackburn Rovers to bring the youngster to North London (The Sun).

Phillips spent the first half of this campaign in the Tottenham youth team and made it onto Ange Postecoglou‘s bench a number of times, but never managed to get on the field.

The centre-half joined Plymouth Argyle early on in the January transfer market, and has been mightily impressive for the Pilgrims as they battle bravely against relegation from the Championship.

Phillips has made 18 appearances for Plymouth so far, and even managed to register an assist in the FA Cup (Transfermarkt).

What lies ahead for Phillips in the immediate future is unknown. Another loan move could be on the cards for next season, while Alasdair Gold claimed the 18-year-old may well challenge for a first-team place in the 2024/25 campaign.

Ashley Phillips could join Sheffield United on loan

If the former is to happen, Spurs may have already found the perfect place to send Phillips to continue his development. That’s because, according to The Sun, Sheffield United are rumoured to be keen on borrowing the defender for next season.

The Blades are almost certain to drop out of the Premier League this term and it seems Chris Wilder is already planning ahead and looking to “exploit the loan market” to bolster his squad for the Championship.

It is believed Sheffield United are “looking into a swoop” for Phillips ahead of the summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

You would imagine Sheffield United will be up there challenging at the top of the Championship next season, and that’s exactly where Phillips needs to be.

He’s unlikely to get any opportunities at Spurs with the competition he has in central defence there, so a regular run of first-team football at the top of the second tier would be ideal.
