Report: Aston Villa complete signing of starlet linked with £1m Spurs transfer

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of rumoured Tottenham target Caleb Chukwuemeka from Northampton Town, in a deal worth £300,000, with add-ons taking the fee up to seven figures.

The 19-year-old joins his younger brother Carney at Villa Park on a three-year contract, with Dean Smith’s side fending off reported interest from Spurs and beating them to his signature.

Chukwuemeka made a breakthrough into the Northampton first-team last campaign, making 22 appearances for the Cobblers in League One.

The young forward only scored once and registered one assist, but a number of promising performances over the season were enough to attract the interest of Spurs.

It was reported last month that Spurs were looking to offer forward Kion Etete and £1 million as part of a potential deal to bring Chukwuemeka to N17 after scouts were impressed with his performance in Northampton’s 2-1 friendly defeat to West Ham.

Villa have also managed to hold off the likes of Rangers, Newcastle, Norwich and Club Brugge, who also held an interest in the England U18 international.

Chukwuemeka definitely seems like one for the future, but with Aston Villa’s established connection to the player’s family, there was always going to be one winner in this transfer race.

Spurs, though, can look forward to keeping young Etete on their books and allow Northampton to develop his all-round game during his loan spell there.
