Report: Aston Villa could compete for the signature of Spurs-linked PL star

The Athletic have revealed that Aston Villa could enter the race to sign rumoured Tottenham target James Ward-Prowse this summer.

Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League has been mathematically confirmed and multiple outlets have reported over the last few weeks that the Saints would not stop Ward-Prowse from leaving the club if they go down (talkSPORT).

Football Insider reported back in March that Tottenham are ‘likely’ to make the 28-year-old a target when the transfer window opens this summer as the North London club are ‘big admirers of the central midfielder.

However, Spurs are not the only club rumoured to be after Ward-Prowse, with The Daily Mail revealing two weeks ago that the Lilywhites may face competition from Newcastle United for the player’s signature.

If The Athletic’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs might also have competition to contend with from Villa for the England international’s signature.

The report explains the Villans’ interest in Ward-Prowse dates back to 2021 when they had an offer of £25m turned down for him.

It is suggested that the Midlands club could reignite their interest in the midfielder this summer, now that he is back on the market.

Spurs Web Opinion

Ward-Prowse would be a decent squad option and his leadership skills would certainly be beneficial for the dressing room but I would rather see Spurs go after Fulham’s Joao Palhinha even though he likely would cost £20m or so more than the Saints star.
