Report: Aston Villa may try to poach manager from Spurs’ next CL opponents

Sporting Lisbon might be managerless for their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next week, with The Athletic now reporting that Aston Villa could make a move for their head coach Ruben Amorim.

Villa are now searching for a new manager after parting ways with Steven Gerrard following their 3-0 loss to Fulham on Thursday.

The Telegraph reported earlier this week that former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was Villa’s number-one target to replace Gerrard.

The report explained that the Midlands club would face a huge task to convince the Argentine to take the job and suggested that Villa would be prepared to wait for the 50-year-old should he be reluctant to make an immediate commitment.

However, The Athletic have now revealed that Pochettino will not be moving to Villa Park as he wants a job at a ‘higher level’. The report explains that Thomas Tuchel has also rejected the Premier League club’s advances.

It is suggested that one of the candidates on Villa’s wishlist is Amorim, who has earned rave reviews for the job he has done at Sporting.

Spurs Web Opinion

Although I have not watched much of Sporting, I was extremely impressed with the way Amorim set the team up in the Portuguese club’s 2-0 win over Spurs last month.

I also think Pochettino has absolutely made the right call to turn down Villa as he would be one of the top names on the wishlist of the next big Champions League club that sack their manager.
