Report: Aston Villa open talks over cut-price deal for former Spurs-linked target

According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa have opened talks over a cut-price deal for Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson, who has previously been on Tottenham’s radar.

Sanson has been a consistent performer in the heart of Marseille’s midfield since arriving from Montpellier in January 2017.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham the past, with Foot Mercato reporting last year that Marseille were looking to cash in on the 26-year-old and that his agent Pini Zahavi, had offered the midfielder to Spurs.

Le Parisien even reported in the summer that Tottenham were considering Sanson as an option as Jose Mourinho was looking to bolster his central midfield options.

The Mail now reports that Tottenham were one of several Premier League clubs who had previously targeted the midfielder but they now suggest he could be Aston Villa bound.

Marseille are said to be open to selling Sanson in order to raise some funds due to their financial struggles and Villa are said to be in pole position to take advantage.

The report suggests that the Villans could land the former French Under-21 international in a cut-price £20m deal before the end of the month.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not sure Sanson will add much to our midfield that it already does not have. If Mourinho is planning on continuing with a double pivot, then the 26-year-old might not be the best fit as he is not blessed with great defensive attributes. In fact, he is very similar in style to Harry Winks and I do not believe he would be an upgrade over the England international.
