Report: Atletico Madrid have advantage over Spurs in race for 23-year-old

Mexican outlet Record report that Atletico Madrid have an advantage over Tottenham and other suitors in the race for Santiago Gimenez as the centre-forward prefers a move to Spain this summer.

Gimenez, who has posted some record-breaking numbers in front of goal for Feyenoord over the last two seasons, looks set to be one of the hotly contested players of the summer transfer window.

Over the last few weeks, various outlets have continued to suggest that Tottenham have identified the 23-year-old as the man to fill the void left by Harry Kane (CaughtOffside).

Over the last few days, it has emerged that the Lilywhites could face competition for the striker’s signature from their North London rivals, Arsenal, who are also thought to be admirers of the Mexican (Rudy Galetti).

Atletico have advantage over Spurs and Arsenal

Record have now said that Feyenoord are expected to listen to offers for Gimenez, who has allegedly made his mind up to leave De Kuip for a bigger club this summer.

The outlet does not mention Spurs, instead naming Arsenal, Juventus and Atletico Madrid as the three clubs who have expressed an interest in a summer deal for the striker.

The report claims that Diego Simeone’s men would have an advantage over the other suitors in the race. This is because Gimenez prefers playing in La Liga, with the Feyenoord star of the belief that Spanish football would be a good fit for him.

However, the publication adds that the centre-forward ‘does not close the doors to any league’ at the moment and it is explained that until now, he has not held advanced negotiations with any club.

Spurs Web Opinion

While I have not watched a lot of Gimenez, I am instinctively quite sceptical about the idea of signing forwards from the Eredivisie as we have seen time and again over recent years that attacking players who arrive from Dutch football struggle to cope with the pace of the Premier League.
