Report: Atletico to battle Spurs for La Liga midfielder

According to a report in Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid are ready to challenge Tottenham in their quest to sign Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has had a fantastic season for Betis, having scored 16 goals in all competitions.

The La Liga club signed Lo Celso earlier this season after triggering an option to buy clause in his loan deal from PSG.

A report in The Sun earlier claimed that Betis are looking to more than double the £21.5 million they paid for Argentine and that Tottenham and Everton are both interested in the player’s services.

Betis have reportedly slapped a €100million-release in Lo Celso’s contract after his fine showing this season but Atletico are said to be ready to spend big on the former PSG man (Mundo Deportivo).

The Madrid club will have a considerable amount to spend in the summer if Antoine Griezmann completes his rumoured move to Barcelona (Guardian).

If Eriksen does end up moving to Real Madrid, then Tottenham would need to sign a new No.10, even if Pochettino plans on primarily adopting the 4-3-3 formation next season.

While Lo Celso has slightly different attributes than the Dane, he has been tremendous as a playmaker for Betis and has also proven his prowess in front of goal. However, at the reported price, we believe Tottenham will be better off going for a more proven star like Lyon’s Nabil Fekir.
