Report: Barcelona have admitted defeat in Lenglet battle amid Spurs links

Sport claim that Barcelona have admitted defeat in their attempt to sell Clement Lenglet permanently and are now looking to loan the Frenchman out.

The report states that with just a week left in the transfer window, Barcelona see the task of selling Lenglet to Tottenham or any other team as being ‘very difficult’, with the Catalan club now said to have ‘practically thrown in the towel’ in their attempts to do so.

However, it is made clear that Xavi Hernandez does not want the centre-back to remain as part of his squad this season, with another loan move now looking the ‘only viable option’.

The publication adds that Barca are relatively optimistic that they can loan out Lenglet, with the outlet adding that there are ‘several options’ on the table ‘in addition to Tottenham’.

It is explained that none of the interested clubs might be able to pay the 28-year-old’s full wages, which is why the Blaugrana may have to cover a part of it.

However, with Barca keen on reducing their wage bill, the La Liga giants are thought to be looking for a club that can take on ‘a very important percentage’ of Lenglet’s salary.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would not be surprised if we see Tottenham reigniting their interest in Lenglet during the final few days of the transfer window if they are able to offload Eric Dier.

It appears like  Spurs’ plan from the beginning was to play the waiting game so that Barca agree to sell the Frenchman for a cut-price fee, given the Catalan side’s desperation to trim their wage bill.
