Report: Barcelona have had their eye on one Spurs player for several years

According to the print edition of AS (05/02/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Bryan Gil has been on Barcelona’s radar for many years.

Gil returned to Sevilla on loan towards the end of the January transfer window, two and a half years since leaving the La Liga club to join Tottenham.

The 21-year-old has failed to have the expected impact since his switch to Spurs and will be hoping to get his career back on track back at Seville.

He made his second debut for the club on Sunday against Barcelona, replacing Oliver Torres at half-time at Camp Nou.

However, it was an outing to forget for the Tottenham man and his Sevilla teammates as Barca ran out 3-0 winners courtesy of second-half goals from Jordi Alba, Gavi and Raphinha.

Ahead of the game on Sunday, AS revealed that Gil could have been lining up for Xavi Hernandez’s men if things had gone a little differently.

The report explained that Barca have been ‘trying to capture’ the Spain international from the time they first spotted him when he was coming through Sevilla’s youth ranks.

However, it is explained that their moves were rebuffed at the time as Gil’s family thought that it was better for the player to stay where he was.

It is worth remembering that Gil was rated as the best young talent in Spanish football when Tottenham secured his services two and a half years ago.

His development has completely stagnated since then and perhaps being closer to home comforts in Seville will help him get his career back on track.
