Report: Barcelona hoping to ‘convince’ defender to join Spurs

Barcelona are attempting to persuade Clement Lenglet to move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to ESPN.

The central defender has been deemed as surplus to requirements by the Catalan giants, who want to offload him to help spark the overhaul of their squad ahead of the new La Liga campaign.

Talks between the two clubs have been ongoing for a number of weeks with Barcelona keen to sell him on a permanent basis, while Spurs would prefer to take the 27-year-old on loan.

Barca are said to be open to the possibility of a loan switch, with the north Londoners covering a sizeable portion of his wages.

Lenglet is open to leaving the Nou Camp, however, it is not known whether he is prepared to move to England.

The French international has dropped further down the pecking order at Xavi’s side following the arrival of Andreas Christensen from Chelsea.

Somewhat concerningly, Spurs have gone from being linked with the likes of Pau Torres and Alessandro Bastoni to a drop in quality if Lenglet is seriously being considered as a transfer target.

Spurs need to spend big if they want to bring in a player who can make a noticeable difference to the left side of their defence, in a similar way in which Cristian Romero has helped to make a big impact.
