Report: Barcelona interested in former Spurs defender who could cost £91m

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are interested in signing former Tottenham Hotspur defender Yuri Berchiche.

Berchiche’s name is not one that many Spurs fans are likely to be familiar with and that is not surprising considering the left-back failed to make a single appearance for the North Londoners’ first-team.

After signing as a 17-year-old in 2007, the Spaniard was released by Spurs just three years later. However, Berchiche has not looked back since leaving Tottenham as he has risen right to the top with impressive spells at Real Sociedad, Eibar, and PSG.

The 30-year-old, who now plays for Athletic Bilbao, has enjoyed yet another solid season, and Mundo Deportivo suggest that Barcelona are keen to sign him.

The Catalan giants have reportedly identified the former Spurs academy defender as the man to give competition to Jordi Alba for the left-back spot.

The report alleges that Berchiche’s release clause stands at a whopping €100million (£91m) and that Bilbao are not willing to negotiate his sale with Barcelona.

Berchiche’s rise of one of many stories that show that not all players develop at the same time. Some are notoriously late developers as was the case with Harry Kane. I doubt many Spurs fans would have been up in arms if Kane had been sold before 2015.
