Report: Barcelona leading the race for Spurs-linked midfielder

According to a report by Corriere dello Sport (as relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb) Barcelona are leading the race to sign rumoured Tottenham target Franck Kessie, with the Catalan club set to meet with the midfielder over the ‘coming days’.

Kessie’s contract at the San Siro runs out in the summer and MilanNews reported last month that Tottenham are currently the front-runners to sign the midfielder, having made the ‘most concrete offer’ for the player.

Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari previously revealed that Barcelona were also keen on landing the 25-year-old as a free agent in the summer.

According to Corriere’s latest update, the Nou Camp outfit are set to hold a meeting with Kessie’s entourage, with the La Liga giants described as being the ‘closest to the Ivorian’.

The report adds that Barca are currently willing to offer the Milan star a five-year contract worth €6.5m (£5.4m) per year but the player is thought to be demanding around €8m (£6.7m) per year, in addition to a signing-on fee.

It is explained that Xavi’s side will ‘try to close’ the deal for Kessie in the ‘next few days’, and the likes of Spurs, Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain are ready to pounce if a deal cannot be reached.

Spurs Web Opinion

We would likely be able to offer Kessie a higher salary than Barca could, given their financial issues. However, unless we have Champions League football to offer, it would be difficult to convince the Ivorian to reject the likes of PSG and Barca in favour of a move to North London.
