Report: Barcelona meet agent about signing star Spurs sold for £12.5m in 2021

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could make a move to sign former Tottenham defender Juan Foyth before the transfer window closes.

Foyth arrived at Spurs from Estudiantes in the summer of 2017 and while he did not get much of a look in during his first season at the club, the Argentine showed real promise in the opportunities that came his way in the 2018-19 campaign.

However, the 24-year-old saw himself fall down the pecking order after Jose Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino at the helm.

After a successful season-long loan spell at Villarreal during the 2020/21 season, the La Liga club activated the option to sign the defender permanently for £12.5m last summer (Marca).

Foyth has featured in several positions for Unai Emery’s side, including in midfield and at centre-back, but he was used most often at right-back last season.

Mundo Deportivo now claim that Barca view the former Spurs man as an option for the right-back role at the Camp Nou.

The report states that Foyth’s agent Claudio Curti has met with Barca Sporting Director Mateu Alemany to discuss a transfer to the Catalan giants.

However, it is explained that Villarreal will not ‘will not make it easy’ for Xavi Hernadez’s men to sign the Argentina international and would only let him leave if his €42m (£35.3m) release clause is met.

Spurs Web Opinion

In hindsight, it is clear that it was an error by Spurs to let Foyth and Kyle Walker-Peters leave. While Mourinho did not seem to fancy either player, I believe both would have fit better into Conte’s set-up – the former in the back three and the latter as a right wing-back. Tottenham should have at least pushed for a sell-on clause in Foyth’s contract as he evidently had not reached his ceiling in North London.
