Report: Barcelona star linked with Spurs could be available on free transfer

Barcelona defender Samuel Umititi, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham over the last few windows, could be available on a free transfer this summer, according to a report from Spanish publication Sport.

Following their capture of Cristian Romero from Atalanta, Spurs are thought to be intent on adding another centre-back to their squad before the transfer window closes.

The French international, who has been hampered by injury problems over the last few years, was previously alleged to be on Tottenham’s radar.

Sport have now revealed the central defender is one of several players that Barca are desperate to move on as they seek to reduce their wage bill.

However, the Catalan giants are said to be struggling to do so, with Umtiti alleged to have rejected all the offers he has received from Ligue 1 clubs.

Barca are thought to be getting increasingly frustrated with the World Cup winner and it is suggested the club are open to terminating the defender’s contract.

If that does come to pass, Spurs could have an opportunity to snap up the experienced centre-back on a free transfer this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Barca pay off Umtiti’s contract, I do not expect Paratici to make a move for the Frenchman. There is a reason why the 27-year-old is not sought after by the top clubs in the Premier League and Europe.

Even putting aside his injury issues, the jury is out on whether he will ever be able to produce the same level of performances he did three years ago.
