Report: Bergvall also rejected an offer from Germany before signing for Spurs

According to BILD, Barcelona were not the only club who were snubbed by Lucas Bergvall, with the newest Tottenham addition also turning down advances from Eintracht Frankfurt during the January transfer window.

Over in Spain, there has been a major inquest over the last week into why Spurs were able to steal Bergvall from under Barcelona’s noses.

Various outlets have outlined a number of reasons, including the fact that Tottenham offered the 18-year-old a higher salary and were prepared to pay a bigger fee to his agent, while Xavi’s announcement that he is leaving Barca at the end of the season is also thought to have played a part in the player’s decision (Sport).

However, the Catalan side were not Tottenham’s only competitor for Bergvall, with Spanish outlet Expressen claiming last week that the likes of Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan had all shown interest in the teenager last month.

Frankfurt made a big effort to sign Lucas Bergvall

BILD have now added another name to that list, explaining that Frankfurt were also very much in the mix for Bergvall, making a serious effort to land the player.

It is explained that the Bundesliga side laid out a careful plan for the midfielder and were even confident at one point that they had won the race for the youngster.

However, that is when Tottenham entered the picture and offered a significantly higher amount than the German side, with Bergvall ‘succumbing’ to the ‘financial temptations’ of the North London side.

The Sweden international then personally cancelled the move to Deutsche Bank Park, which is thought to have left Frankfurt frustrated and disappointed.

By the sounds of it, Tottenham had to see off competition from a whole host of clubs across the continent to land Bergvall. While the finances of the deal would have obviously played a role, the teenager’s decision also shows that talented young players are attracted by the project that is underway at Spurs right now.
