Report: Brazilian midfielder would prefer to join Tottenham over Newcastle

The print edition of Mundo Deportivo (as relayed by Sport Witness) has reported that Philippe Coutinho is keen on a move to Tottenham in January.

Coutinho has struggled to get regular game time at Barcelona this season both under Ronald Koeman and Xavi Hernandez.

The Sunday Mirror (19/12, p66) claimed earlier this week that Barca are looking to cash in on the Brazilian in January in order to fund a move for Manchester City striker Ferran Torres.

The report claimed that the Catalan giants had offered the midfielder to both Spurs and Newcastle.

Mundo Depertivo have now revealed that Coutinho is one of five players who could leave Barcelona when the transfer window opens in January.

The midfielder is said to be keen on getting regular game time under his belt and reigniting his career.

The report adds a return to the Premier League is on the cards for the former Liverpool man and it is alleged that Tottenham ‘seduces’ the 29-year-old more than Newcastle.

Spurs Web Opinion

While there seem to be reports of Barcelona’s willingness to move Coutinho on, I do not see any sources suggesting that Spurs are keen on snapping up the Brazilian.

Coutinho is not the same player he was during his Liverpool days and I am not convinced that he would be an upgrade on the likes of Dele, Ndombele and Lo Celso.
