Report: Bryan Gil could be marked by former Spurs teammate this weekend

AS have revealed that Matt Doherty could be in line for his Atletico Madrid debut against Sevilla on Saturday, which could see him come up against Bryan Gil.

Doherty’s deadline day move came as a shock to many Spurs fans, with the North London club terminating the 30-year-old’s contract so he could sign for Atletico, in order to make way for Pedro Porro.

Spurs currently have Emerson Royal as the first-choice right-wing-back in N17, with Porro serving as his understudy and Djed Spence out on loan.

The Republic of Ireland international is yet to make his debut for the Colchoneros, with Nahuel Molina starting every game at right-back through February.

AS make it clear that Doherty was only signed as a backup to Molina and that the Argentine is likely to remain Diego Simeone’s first choice.

However, it is explained that the former Spurs man could get the nod to start against Sevilla as the 24-year-old is now suspended for the game.

The one other possibility is that Marcos Llorente could be moved to right-back but the publication states that handing Doherty his debut would be the ‘most logical’ option.

AS add that the Irishman has already become popular with the Atletico fans without kicking a ball, owing to the positive things he has said about the club and the support since signing.

He could now be handed a chance to feature in front of his home fans for the first time when Sevilla visit the Metropolitano Stadium.

Jorge Sampaoli has been deploying Gil on the left since the winger’s loan switch to Sevilla.

So, if Doherty starts for Atletico on Saturday, he will almost certainly go head-to-head against the Spaniard, which will be a fascinating battle to watch from a Spurs perspective.

It will be interesting to see how Gil does up against a Premier League proven defender.
