Report: Centre-back allegedly wanted by Tottenham signs new contract

Bayer Leverkusen have announced that rumoured Tottenham target Piero Hincapie has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract at the club.

To some Spurs fans’ disappointment, Spurs did not strengthen at centre-back during the January window but multiple publications over the last couple of weeks have revealed that the North London club are expected to sign two central defenders in the summer (The Athletic and  Football.London).

Hincapie was one of the centre-backs who was linked with a move to Tottenham last month, with BILD even reporting on January 29 the time that the Lilywhites made an offer of €25m (£21.9m) for the 21-year-old.

If Antonio Conte’s men were planning on reigniting their interest in the Ecuadorian in the summer, they now seemingly have their work cut out, with Leverkusen confirming that the defender has put a pen to paper on a new deal.

The Bundesliga side have announced that Hincapie has committed his future until 2027, with the defender expressing a desire to win trophies at Leverkusen in the years to come.

He told the club’s official website: “Leverkusen is exactly the right club. I wasn’t promised too much here but I was given the time on the pitch at a high level as a young player that I wanted.

“I’ve been able to settle in here and reinforce my place in the national team. It’s great motivation for me to continue to produce performances in coming years and aim for titles with Bayer 04.”

While this contract does not rule out the prospect of a summer sale, what this does do is add another £15m to £20m to Leverkusen’s asking price. So, if Hincapie was Tottenham’s top target for the left centre-back role, this development might make the Premier League side reconsider their position.
