Report: Centre-back linked with Spurs now ‘close’ to signing new contract

Lancs Live have revealed that rumoured Tottenham target Ashley Phillips is now ‘close’ to signing his first professional contract with Blackburn Rovers.

Phillips has broken in into Blackburn’s starting lineup this season, having made three appearances in the Championship and one in the League Cup so far (Transfermarkt).

The Daily Mail reported last week that the 17-year-old centre-back had caught the eye of Spurs scouts with his performances for Rovers’ development side last season.

The report added that Tottenham’s managing director of Fabio Paratici was set to watch the teenager in action before the North London club decided on whether to push ahead with an offer.

However, no offer seems to have materialised from Spurs, with The Evening Standard reporting over the weekend that the centre-back is now expected to remain at Ewood Park.

This information has now been backed up by Lancs Live, who claim that Phillips is ‘on course’ to sign a new contract at Blackburn.

The report asserts that the Championship club have scheduled talks over a new deal with the youngster’s entourage on Friday.

Lancs Live state that the negotiations are already ’80 per cent done’ and that Blackburn are ’99 per cent’ confident that an agreement can be reached.

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect Phillips might have come around to the idea of signing a new contract with Blackburn owing to a lack of offers from Spurs or any other Premier League club. Perhaps, Paratici was not quite convinced by the teenager when he scouted him.
