Report: Centre-back linked with Spurs opens contract talks with club

According to a report from Hampshire Live, rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Jannik Vestergaard is now set to begin talks with Southampton over a new contract.

Vestergaard has adapted well to the Premier League since arriving at Southampton in 2017 and has emerged as real leader for the Saints of late.

Centre-back is rumoured to be a priority position for Tottenham to address in the summer and the Dane is reported be one of the names on the club’s radar ahead of the transfer window.

The Daily Star revealed a couple of weeks ago that Jose Mourinho believes Vestergaard could offer more security at centre-back than the current options at his disposal and Tottenham could thus swoop for the 28-year-old in the summer.

The player himself chose to remain coy when asked about the speculation surrounding his future last month.

Hampshire Live now claim that Southampton wish to extend Vestergaard’s contract well beyond 2022 to keep him out of Tottenham’s hands. The report reveals that the club have already begun discussions with the defender’s representatives over a new deal.

Spurs Web Opinion

Vestergaard has had a very good last 12 months and it is understandable why Spurs are looking at him as a potential bargain option as he is about to run into the final year of his deal.

However, I doubt the Lilywhites would be willing to pay big money for him if he were to sign a new contract. It is also possible that the 28-year-old’s entourage have been feeding rumours to the press about Tottenham’s interest in order to get him a lucrative new deal at the St Mary’s.
