Report: Centre-back linked with Spurs earlier this year decides against signing new contract

Tottenham Hotspur have received a potential boost in their rumoured pursuit of Nikola Milenkovic after the central defender has decided not to sign a new contract with Fiorentina, as reported by CalcioMercato.

La Nazione (via Sport Witness) reported last month that Jose Mourinho was keen on bringing Milenkovic to Tottenham in January, while the 23-year-old was also said to be on the radar of Manchester United.

The report suggested that the Serbian international was stalling on signing a new contract at the Artemio Franchi Stadium, with Fiorentina subsequently considering selling him for a cut-price fee when the window opens next month.

It was then reported a week later that the club had not given up hope of extending Milenkovic’s stay, although negotiations were complicated.

CalcioMercato have now confirmed that the young defender has decided that his future lies away from the Serie A side and that he will not be extending his current deal which runs out in the summer of 2022.

However, the report does not mention Tottenham as a potential suitor for Milenkovic, with Inter Milan, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid said to be the front-runners as things stand.
