Report: Champions League side now lead the race for Sergio Reguilon

Atletico Madrid have joined the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Italian news outlet have claimed that Atletico have moved ahead of Lazio and Fulham in the hope of landing the Spanish international.

The La Liga outfit are said to have opened talks with Reguilon’s representatives to discuss the prospect of bringing him back to Spain before the transfer window closes.

Reguilon has found himself frozen out of Antonio Conte’s first team plans in north London and has been training apart from the squad together with Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele prior to the latter pair having departed for Villarreal and Napoli, respectively (Mirror).

Conte brought in the experienced Croatian Ivan Perisic to compete with Ryan Sessegnon for the left wing-back berth which has left Reguilon surplus to requirements.

SpursWeb Opinion

If Reguilon has any hopes of breaking back into the Spanish squad ahead of the World Cup he will know that he needs to be playing regular football and a return to his home city to play for Atletico would certainly be a lure for him.

Reguilon possesses plenty of pace, but his overall game needs vast improvement if he wants to be a top wing-back, especially when it comes to the attacking third where he has squandered plenty of opportunities when through on goal last season.
