Report: Championship duo leading race to sign youngster who quit Spurs

Bristol City and Cardiff City are leading the race to sign former Tottenham midfielder Elliot Thorpe, according to Football Insider.

The 20-year-old was released by Spurs at the end of June after reportedly rejecting a new contract to go in search of more first-team opportunities.

The midfielder came close to joining Hoffenheim over the summer and completed a medical with the Bundesliga side, but the deal fell at the final hurdle due to compensation issues required to be sent Spurs’ way at the time.

Since then, Thorpe has become a free agent, and Football Insider now report the youngster has appeared on the radar of a handful of Championship clubs, with Bristol City and Cardiff currently leading the way for his signature.

Thorpe had also previously attracted interest in the Premier League from the likes of Leicester City and Brentford, but it appears as if the second tier of English football is now his most likely destination.

Thorpe clearly believed Spurs wasn’t the place for him to continue growing, and no one can blame a player for wanting to search for more opportunities.

He is still young and hasn’t had much senior experience, and a move to a Championship side could be very beneficial for his development, rather than staying in the Spurs youth set up which would’ve likely happened.
