Report: Chelsea are reluctant to offer Conor Gallagher a new deal as Spurs circle

The Daily Mail have revealed that Chelsea have doubts about offering Conor Gallagher a bumper-new contract as some at the club believe that the midfielder has technical limitations.

Over the last few weeks, multiple sources have suggested that Tottenham could reignite their interest in Gallagher next summer, having failed to secure him during the last two windows.

This includes an update by Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge who pointed out to GiveMeSport a couple of days ago that Ange Postecoglou remains a big fan of the England international.

Chelsea may not offer Gallagher a new contract

The Mail have now stated that while Gallagher wants to stay and Mauricio Pochettino also wants to keep him, the Chelsea hierarchy still have doubts about the player.

It is explained that while the 23-year-old is a key player of the current Blues side, which is in a state of flux, some at the club doubt if he is good enough to help the club fulfil their ambitions.

The outlet alleges that Gallagher’s work-rate is seen as his most valuable asset but there are question marks at the West London side over whether he offers enough in possession. As a result, Chelsea are said to be reluctant to offer the midfielder a contract worth more than £ 150,000 per week.

The Mail say that Gallagher’s entourage maintain that their demands of a big salary are driven by a need to feel wanted, with the player unlikely to commit to a modest deal, especially given that he looks set to be part of the England squad for Euro 2024.

The report reveals that while Chelsea would have entertained offers of £50m-£60m for Gallagher last month, they are now acknowledging that his value will drop drastically between now and the summer.

Finally, the Mail add that Tottenham retain a ‘solid interest’ in the midfielder and would have an advantage over other suitors as the player would prefer to remain in London if he left Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Chelsea do not see Gallagher as a part of their long-term plans, one would presume that they would offer him a new contract to protect his value ahead of the summer window. If the 23-year-old does not sign a new deal, one would certainly expect Tottenham to test the waters with an offer.
