Report: Chelsea could meet release clause of rumoured Spurs target

Sport have revealed that Chelsea could meet the release clause of rumoured Tottenham target Jules Kounde in the summer.

It was reported at one point last summer that Tottenham had agreed on a fee of around €30m (£25.6m) plus Davinson Sanchez with Sevilla for Kounde (Gianluca Di Marzio).

However, the move never materialised and the centre-back ended up staying put at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, with Spurs snapping up Cristian Romero from Atalanta instead.

Super Deporte claimed last week that Tottenham remain interested in the Sevilla star and could make another attempt to snap him up when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

However, the report added that Chelsea were the frontrunners to snap up Kounde, with Thomas Tuchel identifying the Frenchman as the player to replace Antonio Rudiger, whose contract at Stamford Bridge ends in the summer.

Sport have now suggested that Barca are also eyeing a move for Kounde in the summer and that Nou Camp is the centre-backs’ preferred destination.

However, they too back Chelsea to reignite their pursuit of the Sevilla star in the summer, insisting that the Blues could meet the 23-year-old’s €80m (£66m) release clause.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Kounde would be a realistic target for Spurs in the summer, even if we do manage to qualify for the Champions League. The French international is likely to have several top offers to chose from.

Tottenham will have to be content with competing for the next tier of central defenders like Gleison Bremer, Alessio Romagnoli and Sven Botman.
