Report: Chelsea ‘could not meet demands’ of Tottenham-linked manager

The Independent have revealed that Chelsea passed up on hiring rumoured Tottenham target, Luis Enrique, as the Blues were not able to meet the Spaniard’s demands.

Enrique has been out of work since parting ways with Spain following last year’s World Cup and the Spaniard has been mooted as a target for both Tottenham and Chelsea over recent weeks.

The Telegraph revealed a few days ago that the Spaniard was set to fly to London again to hold face-to-face talks with Spurs, having already spoken with the Chelsea hierarchy over recent weeks.

This information was also backed up by 90 min, who reported on Tuesday that Tottenham held ‘positive discussions’ with Enrique’s representatives when they reached out to him and now want to sit down in person with the former Barcelona boss.

However, over the past 24 hours, it has emerged that Enrique is no longer a contender for the Chelsea job, with former Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino now alleged to be the favourite for the role (Fabrizio Romano).

The Independent have now revealed why that is the case, stating that while the former Barcelona boss initially ‘impressed’ the Stamford hierarchy in his interviews.

However, it is explained that Enrique made ‘a number of demands’ that Todd Boehly and co just could not meet, which is why they ruled him out of consideration.

Spurs Web Opinion

One can imagine that Enrique’s demands would have had to do with new signings.

The Chelsea squad looks in need of major surgery and they are unlikely to be able to continue spending big over the next few transfer windows, given the FFP issues involved.

Despite the fact that Spurs have played poorly this season, our squad is arguably just three or four additions away (primarily at centre-back, attacking midfield) away from being quite well-rounded.
