Report: Chelsea could scupper Tottenham’s hopes of landing centre-back

The Sun have revealed that Chelsea could enter the race to sign Torino centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham over recent days.

Buongiorno has emerged as one of the most consistent defenders across Serie A over the last 12 months and he is expected to be part of Italy’s squad for the Euros this summer.

Tottenham’s interest in the 24-year-old first came to light earlier this week when Calciomercato claimed that Spurs had ‘initiated contact’ over a deal for the central defender.

The report stated that the Lilywhites had reached out to Torino to understand the cost of the operation and revealed that AC Milan and Napoli had also shown keen interest in the 24-year-old.

A couple of days ago, La Repubblica (as relayed by TuttoJuve) also backed up Spurs’ interest in the centre-back, claiming that Ange Postecoglou’s men are ‘in the front row’ to sign the Italy international and have been ‘moving under the radar for a few months now’.

Chelsea and Spurs keen on Alessandro Buongiorno

According to The Sun, Chelsea have also been tracking Buongiorno closely and are expected to continue keeping an eye on his progress over the coming weeks.

The report says that the Blues value the centre-back’s versatility and competence on the ball and could push ahead with a move for him.

However, it is revealed that Torino are under no pressure to sell the defender since he is contracted to the club until 2028, with the Italian side expected to demand £35m for their star man.

Not only would Tottenham be able to offer Buongiorno European football, which Chelsea would not be, but the Lilywhites can also outmuscle the West London club financially, given their PSR situation of the two sides at the minute.
