Report: Chelsea could swoop for player who allegedly turned down Spurs

90min.com have reported that Chelsea are set to enter the race for Villarreal defender Pau Torres, who allegedly turned down the chance to join Tottenham over the summer.

Torres has emerged as one of the most elegant and reliable central defenders in La Liga over the last two years and has become an integral part of Luis Enrique’s Spain team.

Tottenham reportedly tabled an offer worth £55 million for the Villarreal man during the summer but he chose to stay put at his boyhood club.

Sources from Spain have revealed that Villarreal had accepted Spurs’ bid but the 24-year-old “preferred to wait for a better offer”, with Real Madrid also alleged to be eyeing him as an option.

However, 90min have now revealed that Tottenham’s London rivals, Chelsea are ready to join the race for Torres.

The report claims that Thomas Tuchel’s side are seeking multiple defensive reinforcements in 2022, with the Villarreal man being one of the names on their radar after Chelsea scouts issued ‘glowing reports’ on the defender.

Spurs Web Opinion

Signing players of Torres’ quality is always going to be difficult without Champions League football. That was perhaps the same reason why Spurs missed out on Jules Kounde.

Romero was arguably the best we could get but I doubt whether the Argentine would have been Paratici’s first choice had Kounde or Torres been open to a move to Spurs.
