Report: Chelsea enter race for Spurs-linked centre-back after Kounde deal fails

CaclioMercatoWeb.it have revealed that Chelsea have now entered the race to sign Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham this summer.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that Torres was one of the options on Tottenham’s radar for the left-sided centre-back role (Football.London) but the North London club eventually ended up signing Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona.

Despite Lenglet’s arrival, talkSPORT suggested a couple of weeks ago that Spurs were still eyeing a move for the Villarreal star and were ready to find exits for Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon to make way for him.

However, CalicoMercatoWeb have now revealed that Torres has emerged as a target for Chelsea as the Blues look set to miss out on Jules Kounde, who is expected to complete a move to Barcelona.

Thoms Tuchel’s men are now allegedly ready to offer €50m (£42.5m) to Unai Emery’s men for the Spain international.

The report adds that while Juventus are also keen on signing Torres, the Serie A giants might now have to look elsewhere as they would not be able to compete with Chelsea financially.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Conte really wanted Torres, Tottenham would have turned their attention to the Spaniard after it became clear that Bastoni and Gvardiol were not available this summer.

The fact that Spurs signed Lenglet instead suggests that Conte has his doubts over how the Villarreal star will fare in the Premier League.

If Chelsea do sign Torres for big-money, that could also have an impact on Lo Celso’s future as Villarreal will have the funds required to sign the Argentine.
