Report: Chelsea have advantage in race to sign rumoured Tottenham target

According to CalcioMercatoWeb, Chelsea are now the frontrunners in the race to sign Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries, despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Dumfries signed for Inter last summer and has impressed in his time over in Italy. In the first half of this campaign, he has two goals and three assists to his name in 20 appearances (Transfermarkt).

The 26-year-old is coming off the back of an excellent World Cup on a personal level, too. While the Netherlands may have lost on penalties to eventual champions Argentina in the quarter-finals, Dumfries played every minute for his country and managed to bag a goal and two assists in the tournament (Transfermarkt).

His World Cup displays have led to a spike in value, with Italian outlet Radio Radio suggesting it would take a bid of over £50 million for Inter Milan to let Dumfries go now.

With Spurs in the market for a new right wing-back (90Min), it was reported at the start of this month that the North London club were battling it out with rivals Chelsea to secure the services of Dumfries (TuttoSport).

It also emerged that Manchester United held an interest in the player (Rudy Galetti), but it appears Chelsea are now in the driving seat.

CalcioMercato reports Graham Potter’s side are leading the race to nab Dumfries and cite a £44 million price tag for the Netherlands star.

With January fast approaching and several clubs circling, it appears Dumfries will have a few options to pick from should Inter Milan move ahead with plans to cash in on him (CalcioMercatoWeb).

Spurs Web Opinion

I really can’t see us getting into a bidding war with Chelsea for a player like Denzel Dumfries. Yes, he had a good World Cup, but there are plenty of other candidates out there who can play this role who are arguably better suited to our style of play.
