Report: Chelsea make player linked with Spurs their top defensive target

According to a report in the Daily Express, Chelsea want to beat Tottenham to the signing of West Ham centre-half Issa Diop.

The report claims that the Blues have now made Diop, who has previously been linked to a move to Spurs (Sky Sports), their primary target this month. Frank Lampard’s side are reportedly readying a £40million bid for the French defender.

The report also goes on to add that Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho wants to bring Diop to Spurs as Jan Vertonghen’s long term replacement, with the Belgian’s contract running out at the end of the season.

With both Spurs and Chelsea said to be keen on the 23-year-old central back, Diop could be subject to a bidding war from the two London rivals this month.

However, the report also reveals that new Hammers boss David Moyes is desperate to keep hold of the defender for as long as he can.

Spurs Web Opinion

If we are to invest in a centre half in January, I would much rather it be someone like Diop who is proven in the Premier League. The Frenchman has been superb for West Ham since arriving in the Premier League a couple of years ago. Given his age, I believe he represents much better value for money than someone like Kalidou Koulibaly.
