Report: Chelsea set to abandon January pursuit of Spurs-linked defender

90 min have claimed that Chelsea are set to abandon their pursuit of rumoured Tottenham target Josko Gvardiol ahead of January and turn their attention to Monaco centre-back Benoit Badiashile instead.

It was 90 min who reported two weeks ago that Chelsea had the upper hand over the likes of Spurs, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Manchester City in the race for Gvaridol.

The report explained that this was because Graham Potter’s men want to sign the 20-year-old next month while the other clubs are only interested in summer deals, which is why the Blues were ‘confident’ of winning the race for the Croat.

However, the same publication has now offered an update on Chelsea’s pursuit of Gvardiol explaining that their discussions with Leipzig over the centre-back have proven ‘fruitless’.

It is explained that this is because the defender’s stock has risen considerably after the World Cup and the Bundesliga side would thus be happy to wait until next summer to sell the player.

Potter’s men are said to be keen for immediate reinforcements to their backline, which is why they have now turned their attention to Badiashile instead.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Gvardiol has proven to be too expensive for Chelsea, the likelihood of Spurs winning the race for the Croat is minimal. The North London club will likely focus all their efforts on trying to secure Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan next summer.
