Report: Chelsea were scared their player would join Spurs this summer

Milan News have reported that Chelsea were worried that Olivier Giroud would join Tottenham Hotspur on a free this summer, which is why they chose to extend his contract.

The Blues had an option to extend Giroud’s contract for an extra year this summer, which they have decided to activate.

This comes despite the fact that Chelsea have Giroud, Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham at the club already, plus any additional strikers they sign this summer.

The report from Milan News claimed that Chelsea have essentially moved to block Giroud from joining Spurs this summer, as the North London side were leading the race for the Frenchman’s signature.

It is said that Chelsea could still choose to sell the striker this year, with AC Milan mentioned as a possible destination, but they are against strengthening a direct rival such as Tottenham.

Spurs may be on the hunt for a new striker this summer as Harry Kane is once again the only senior figure at the club after Carlos Vinicius’ loan spell came to an end.
