Report claims Conte ‘hints at more summer transfers’ in World Cup comments

Football London journalist, Alasdair Gold, believes Conte’s recent comments on the 2022 World Cup hinted at additional signings for Spurs this summer.

Tottenham have already welcomed six new faces through the doors this summer in the form of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, and Djed Spence.

Reports have suggested that number seven may be on the way, with Tottenham allegedly agreeing on a fee with Udinese for 19-year-old Destiny Udogie (CalcioMercato and Gianluca Di Marzio), while Nicolo Zaniolo from Roma is also heavily linked (90 min).

However, despite Spurs strengthening their squad under Conte, it is destined to be a season of unknowns due to the November/December World Cup in Qatar.

The Premier League season is set to go on an unprecedented break between November 13 and December 26, throwing up a host of potential issues related to fitness, injuries, and concentration levels.

As such, Conte has claimed clubs will need to back their managers with an ‘important number of players’ which Gold believes hints at more summer signings.

Conte said (Football London): “The problems are for all the teams. The same problems for Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, United, Arsenal, West Ham and Nottingham Forest, the last team [to arrive] in the Premier League.

“We all have the same problems and we have to be ready to face these problems.

“For every coach and manager, it will be the first time this situation interrupts the league and to lose players for one month and a half, and then to restart the competition with the players, where you don’t know in the way they’ll come back after the World Cup.

“For this reason, it’ll be very important to have a strong squad, the number of the players I think every club has to give the coach the opportunity to have an important number of players in the squad.

“For injuries, for fatigue. For a lot of situations, it will be very difficult for every team and club this season.”

Alasdair Gold wrote: ‘His answer suggested the need for more transfers this summer for clubs like Tottenham and perhaps also in the January window as the fallout of the World Cup with injuries and fatigue becomes clear.’

Spurs Web Opinion:

I am still expecting another two signings for Spurs this summer, one at centre-back and one in midfield. However, Alasdair raises a good point regarding January, as Conte may want more reinforcements depending on how the World Cup shakes out for Spurs.
