Report claims Diego Simeone has given Spurs a boost in pursuit of Atletico player

The January transfer window is well and truly open, and the rumours are beginning to fly around for Tottenham Hotspur and Jose Mourinho.

It was reported by Foot Mercato that Spurs have already opened negotiations with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Thomas Lemar.

Diario AS claim that the current Spurs head coach, Mourinho, is a big fan of the ex-Monaco attacker, despite the fact his big move to Atletico hasn’t exactly gone to plan.

So far this season, Lemar has failed to score or assist a single goal. He hasn’t even played 90 minutes in La Liga since October last year (Transfer Market).

However, if Mourinho could unlock the form he showed at Monaco when he bagged 14 goals and 18 assists in the 2016/17 season, then Spurs could be on for a winner (Transfer Market).

The Mirror have now claimed that Diego Simeone, Atletico manager, has given Spurs and Arsenal a boost in their pursuit of the player by refusing to shut down rumours of an exit.

He said: “Lemar is an important player who hasn’t been able to develop his game but who has characteristics that others don’t have.

“If Lemar can stay or not…we know that agents work in an exemplary way.

“Clubs work in terms of the needs of the clubs. But, as a footballer, every time he has been available, he’s played a lot more than he hasn’t played.

“His characteristics have always excited me. But he hasn’t been able to live up to expectations.”

“Let’s hope he has a good moment when he comes back from injury.”
