Son is now very much the face of Spurs after Harry Kane’s departure and he was clearly the most obvious choice for the captaincy this summer.

The South Korean has stepped up to the plate since being handed more leadership responsibility and has hit the ground running at the start of the new season, with eight goals to his name so far.

There are even reports over the last couple of months suggesting that Spurs have begun talks to tie the 31-year-old to a new long-term contract (90 min).

Son came close to leaving Spurs for Liverpool

However, The Telegraph have now suggested that Son could have left Tottenham at the end of the 2021-22 season if the club had not qualified for the Champions League.

The report states that the forward was considering his options at the time, explaining that Liverpool were sniffing around the player, who was interested in making a move to Anfield.

However, Son is alleged to have decided to stay after Tottenham pipped Arsenal to a fourth-place finish in dramatic fashion that season.

If there is truth to this report, then we should be eternally grateful to Antonio Conte for steering us to a top-four finish in the 2022-23 season as losing Son and then Kane in quick succession would have been an unmitigated disaster.
