Report claims Mourinho may have just ‘saved Daniel Levy millions’ with tactical decision

According to a report in Football.London, Jose Mourinho may have finally resolved his dilemma over Gedson Fernandes’ best position after his impressive showing at right-back against Ipswich Town.

Fernandes completed ninety minutes against the Tractor Boys and he was a constant menace down the right flank all game, showing some smart interplay with the likes of Lucas Moura and Jack Clarke.

Mourinho admitted after the game that he had been impressed with the 21-year-old’s performance in the new position.

Football.London claims that the Spurs boss has been unsure about Fernandes’ best position since he arrived on loan in January, although he has been used as a right-back in training.

On the back of his impressive showing against Paul Lambert’s side, it is claimed that Mourinho may be ready to give him a chance to prove himself at right-back in the upcoming friendlies, as well as during Spurs’ frantic start to the season.

If Fernandes proves that he is up to the task, it is claimed that he could be used as the second choice right-back next season and could thus save the club millions, which could instead be used to sign other targets.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not see how so many Spurs fans seem to have such a strong opinion of Gedson Fernandes given how little we have actually seen of him since he arrived. He was not tested defensively against Ipswich and we will not know how he would cope at right-back against better quality opposition. However, one cannot entirely rule out the possibility of the youngster doing enough to convince Mourinho that he can be the second choice right-back next season.
