Report claims Mourinho may have lied about Spurs’ dropped interest in target

Tottenham Hotspur were apparently interested in signing Bruno Fernandes back in the summer transfer window, which has since been confirmed by both the player and Sporting’s club president.

The club president stated that Tottenham offered around €65m for the player, but Sporting deemed this an unattractive offer due to €20m coming in add-ons (Standard).

Bruno Fernandes also spoke out on the dealings again this week, stating that Tottenham was the only club he agreed to talk to, and the club who wanted him the most (Record).

However, a revived interested in the player this January seemed unlikely when Jose Mourinho told the media that Fernandes was out of Spurs’ reach in the market now (Daily Mail).

The Athletic have now reported that there is a feeling in Portugal that this was a tactic from Mourinho to drive the price down for Fernandes.

The report says that Fernandes is actually still a target for the North London club, but there is little chance of a bid above €70 million as Sporting are hoping for.
