Report claims Spurs’ failure to land defender could open up transfer opportunity for West Ham

Tottenham Hotspur had a very productive transfer window, managing to bring in six new players in areas of the squad that needed strengthening.

Reports indicate that the only disappointment Jose Mourinho had with the club’s transfer business was their failure to land Milan Skriniar, with the club instead looking at other alternatives including Swansea City’s Joe Rodon (Transfer Window Podcast).

It turns out that Spurs’ failure to land Skriniar might actually open the door for London rivals West Ham to get one of their targets in during the January transfer window.

Calcio Mercato reports that Antonio Conte wanted to bring in Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic as a replacement for Skriniar.

Milenkovic is also reportedly a target for West Ham, with the club seeing £20m offer for the Serbian turned down by Fiorentina last month.

The report reveals that for the time being, Inter have scrapped plans they had of signing Milenkovic since Skriniar ended up staying.

However, the 23-year-old has not signed a contract extension with Fiorentina as he has his heart set on a move away from the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

This might potentially open the door for the Hammers to swoop for the central defender on a cut-price deal during the January transfer window.
