Report claims Spurs’ pursuit of Italian international collapsed due to injury

According to a report by Forza Roma, Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit Nicolo Zaniolo collapsed due to the serious injury which the Roma star picked up last season.

Zaniolo is said to have been a long-term target for Tottenham, with the club being linked with a move for the midfielder as far back as in 2019 (Mirror).

There were even reports last summer which suggested that the North Londoners saw an offer of £45million for the 21-year-old being turned down by Roma.

Forza Roma claim that Zaniolo could have been on Tottenham’s radar had he not picked up an ACL injury last year.

The report suggests that the Italian international was keen to move abroad and Tottenham ‘were ready to welcome him’ to London but the plan collapsed after the suffering the knee injury.

Zaniola, who has not played a single minute of football this season, is said to be in the final phase of his recovery.

If it is true that Spurs pulled out of the deal after Zaniolo’s injury, that would be understandable as a ruptured ACL can be quite detrimental to a player’s career. Given how long he has been out, it remains to be seen if Zaniolo would have the same explosiveness when he returns to action.
