Report claims that 28-year-old has ‘pushed’ for Spurs move

It looks like it is only a matter of time before Tottenham Hotspur announce the capture of Matt Doherty.

Football.London claim that the right-back is set to become Spurs’ third summer signing after the North Londoners agreed on a transfer fee of around £12million plus add ons with Wolves for his transfer.

The 28-year-old has reportedly also agreed on personal terms with the club.

On social media, there has been a lot made of the fact that the Republic of Ireland international grew up as an Arsenal fan.

However, it looks like that did not stop the defender from being keen to complete a move to the Lilywhites, once he heard of the club’s interest.

The Guardian have revealed that Doherty was looking to make a step up from Wolves this summer, having recently changed his representation to super-agent Jorge Mendes.

The report claims that when the right-back heard that Jose Mourinho’s side wanted him, he ‘pushed’ for a transfer to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs Web Opinion

Doherty is not the first player to represent a rival club to the one he supported growing up and will not be the last. He clearly wanted to come and it appears as if Jose Mourinho was also keen on snapping him up. While Doherty is not going to be a long-term solution to our issues at right-back, it is an excellent deal for Spurs if the fee being reported is true.
