Report: Claims that Tottenham have agreed £25.8m sale are ‘slightly premature’

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has claimed reports of a fee being agreed between Tottenham and Ajax for Steven Bergwijn are ‘slightly premature’ at this stage.

The Dutch side have made Bergwijn a prime transfer target this summer, while De Telegraaf reported they managed to seal a €30 million (£25.8m) deal for the winger on Monday.

But it has now been said the claims have come slightly too early with Football.London revealing an agreement on the fee has not been reached as of yet.

The same report does note that Bergwijn’s switch to Ajax is expected to materialise ‘sooner rather than later’ with Spurs keen to recoup as much of the fee they paid to PSV Eindhoven in 2020.

Bergwijn has endured a difficult stint in North London since securing a move worth £27m (BBC Sport), struggling to find a permanent place in the starting line-up.

A likely exit this summer would see him leave Spurs having recorded just eight goals and 10 assists in more than 80 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt).

The reports in the Netherlands seemed to have jumped the gun a little, but it has given an indication that Spurs will be receiving a fee close to that amount regardless.

It looks like a pretty good move for both parties as Ajax will be a better place for Bergwijn to play, while Spurs will get a decent amount for an out-of-form forward.
