Report claims Toby Alderweireld’s Spurs future is still uncertain under Mourinho

A report from Football.London has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur may decide to sell Toby Alderweireld this summer, despite the centre-half’s impressive displays over the last couple of weeks.

The Belgian international found himself on the bench for Tottenham’s first three games after the restart as Jose Mourinho started with a pairing of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez.

However, Alderweireld won his place back in the team following Spurs’ horror show at Sheffield United, and his return has coincided with an improved run of form.

Despite this, Football.London reveal that Alderweireld will be asking himself some questions about his future at Tottenham after Dier’s contract extension.

It is claimed that, despite the experienced defender signing a new contract with the club back in December, Tottenham could still cash in on him this summer.

The report suggests that Tottenham may have just handed the former Atletico Madrid defender a contract to protect his market value.

Given that this might be the last transfer window in which the club can get a decent fee for the defender, it is claimed that they could find it difficult to turn down a good offer.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not see Jose wanting to let both Alderweireld and Vertonghen leave at the same time. That could leave us with an extremely inexperienced backline unless we bring in some top defenders to compensate for the loss. I expect Dier, Alderweireld and Sanchez to continue to be our three main central defensive options next season, with the club likely to sign a younger, upcoming centre-half like Kim Min-jae, who could learn from them and be eased into the team.
