Report claims why Jan Vertonghen has not been offered a new contract

While the vast majority of the Tottenham squad have started the season poorly, Jan Vertonghen has arguably been one of our worst players so far this season.

The 32-year-old, who has been a rock in the heart of Tottenham’s defence for a number of seasons has made uncharacteristic mistakes and has looked off the pace in more than one match.

According to a report by Football Insider, the Belgian’s drop in form is due partly to the fact that he has become increasingly affected by ankle problems.

Vertonghen is one of three first team players who are out of contract at the end of the season and the report claims that Mauricio Pochettino is not convinced that he should be offered a new deal.

It is suggested that while the former Ajax man is keen to extend his stay, Pochettino is worried that the Belgian’s ankle issues are hampering his mobility and wish to see a significant improvement in his performances before a contract offer is made.

It is anybody’s guess how good their source is but fitness issues would certainly explain Vertonghen’s drastic drop in form. While the Belgian has been a great servant for the club over the years, it does look like his time at the club is nearing to a close. Unless he turns around his form quickly, he will likely be dropped in favour of Davinson Sanchez or Juan Foyth.
