Report: Club are keen to renegotiate existing sell-on clause with Tottenham

Sporting Lisbon are reportedly looking to reduce the sell-on clause Tottenham Hotspur hold for Marcus Edwards from 35% to 20%, and could use Manuel Ugarte as a bargaining tool.

Edwards left Tottenham in 2019 and found his way to Sporting in January of last year. As part of the move, Spurs initially had a 50% sell-on clause for the young winger.

That figure was reduced by 15% as part of the Pedro Porro deal this January, which leaves Spurs with a 35% stake in any future sale of Edwards (Sky Sports).

There is thought to be plenty of interest in Edwards, too, with many clubs across Europe monitoring the 24-year-old after a brilliant season for the Portuguese side (Fabrizio Romano).

Tottenham meanwhile have been looking at facilitating a summer move for Sporting’s Uruguayan midfielder Ugarte (Leonino).

According to a report from O Jogo (29/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), the North London side are holding off on making a firm move for the 22-year-old until they find a new manager.

However, come the summer, it sounds like there could be plenty of room to negotiate for both sides, as the latest from O Jogo suggests the Portuguese giants want to use Ugarte to improve their position with Edwards.

It is thought Sporting are keen to limit the amount of money they would lose to Spurs if Edwards was sold, and are looking to put together a similar proposal to the one which saw Porro leave in January.

As per the report, a 15% stake in Edwards could be the sacrifice Spurs have to make in order to sign Ugarte, with their hold over Edwards dropping from 35% to just 20%.

This could be a really good move for all parties. Sporting clearly want the best from any potential Edwards deal, and we would still get a cut of any fee anyway.

If we are keen on Ugarte, we can use this to our advantage in the summer.
